Revision for Subjects – Aqaaid, Fiqh, Islamic History & Akhlaaq

It’s that time of the year again, Alhumdulillah!

I’ve had this in my drafts ever since November last year but finally decided to post it now. Alhumdulillah.

For tips on the revision of Orals, click here: https://madrasahteacher.wordpress.com/2020/11/09/revision-of-surahs-duas-hadeeth/

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐬 𝐅𝐢𝐪𝐡, 𝐀𝐪𝐚𝐚𝐢𝐝, 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 & 𝐀𝐤𝐡𝐥𝐚𝐚𝐪.⁣

• 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐳𝐳𝐞𝐬: ⁣

Class Quizzes are one of the most fun and effective ways to revise work.

⁣- The class can be split into groups/teams. Ideally, Girls on 1 team and Boys in another team. ⁣

– Mention your rules for the quiz such as ‘no shouting out answers’ etc

⁣- Set an incentive or reward for the winning team.

⁣- Draw up a score board on the board. ⁣

– You should ensure to ask questions of similar difficulty to each group in 1 round. ⁣

𝐌𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐳 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈’𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤:⁣

I made the quiz more fun/challenging by giving each team a chance to set questions for the other team.

And they can appoint a leader (or you can!) to question the other team. (You’d actually be surprised at what difficult questions they asked and how strict they were with giving points! Hehe)⁣

✨ This is a no prep activity if you use the questions found after each lesson in the textbook.

Or, you can use a past paper to choose questions from.⁣

𝘈𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦: 𝟽 𝘶𝘱𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 (𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝟷)

⁣⁣• 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫/𝐁𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫

⁣Select a few lessons from the kitab from which each student should choose 1 lesson to design a creative A4 poster together with a little presentation or revision of the lesson.⁣

Each child can then present the lesson with the poster to the rest of the class.⁣

Again, this is a no prep activity and you can choose an incentive for those that complete this activity (such as free time or reading time or even R5/R10)⁣This revision activity can be done in pairs or in groups also.⁣

𝘈𝘨𝘦: 𝟿 𝘶𝘱𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 (𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝟹)⁣⁣

• 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝

⁣- Pair the students up (use your discretion and avoid pairs where personalities clash, 2 high-achievers or 2 low-achievers)

⁣- Choose a specific amount of lessons

– Ask them to prepare an exam/test for the partner⁣ on those lessons

– Once they’ve prepared it, ask them to swap papers and give them a time limit to complete.

Then, swap papers back again and each gets to mark the paper they set.

𝘈𝘨𝘦: 𝟷𝟶 𝘶𝘱𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 (𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝟺)

• 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧/𝐁𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫⁣

At the beginning of the Madrasah day/time, Choose 1 lesson for each/few students and give them time during class to prepare the lesson as revision. ⁣

They can be creative or use the board. (Don’t forget to say: ‘Today Moulana Hanzalah/Apa Maariyah (use child’s name) will be teaching us today! – they love it!

)⁣𝘈𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦: 𝟷𝟶 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘶𝘱𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 (𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝟺 𝘶𝘱𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴)⁣

• 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐮𝐩 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬/𝐈𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬

⁣⁣Use the same set of sticks that were used for your Orals revision and stick questions onto them. ⁣⁣

If the student answers correctly, he/she or if in teams, they get to keep the stick.

Winner is the one with the most amount of sticks.⁣⁣

𝘈𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦: 7 𝘶𝘱𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 (𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝟺 𝘶𝘱𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴)⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

• 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞⁣⁣

Use any board from a board game (P.s: make sure it has no animate objects/features).

Make your own question cards or use a past year exam paper. (use different types of questioning styles like True/False etc also).

⁣⁣- You can pair the students up or make teams for this game.⁣⁣

– Use the 30 seconds timer. ⁣⁣

– Winning team is the one that answers most questions correctly (1 point per answer/move 1 space per each correct answer)

⁣⁣𝘈𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦: 𝟿 𝘶𝘱𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴 (𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝟹 𝘶𝘱𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴)⁣⁣⁣

May Allah Ta’ala make it easy for your students and bless them with understanding and amal. Aameen.

Springing up Our Salah

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

From the Ahadīth of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, we are taught to teach children to pray Salāh from age 7. ⁣⁣

Alhumdulillāh, we as teachers encourage this but as they grow older, it’s important for us to instil the importance of not missing a Salāh in them.

⁣⁣Last year, I was teaching 9-10year olds and when all of them had turned 10, I decided to do a 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐥ā𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 of 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫.

This post has details regarding Week 1 of the theme. InshaAllah, more to come regarding the next weeks.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞 & 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐦 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐤𝐬.⁣⁣

I bought oval-shaped clocks for the boys and heart shaped ones for the girls. (Clocks were purchased from Durban – Osman’s for approx. R35 each)⁣⁣

The reason for gifting them the alarm clocks was to teach them responsibility and to create awareness in their homes also.⁣⁣

The purpose of creating the theme was to create interest and support to the students in performing all 5 Salāh as many kids feel unsupported from their parents and home situations.⁣⁣

Envelope Contents

Each student’s envelope contained:

Envelope Contents
  • Yearly Perpetual Salah Calendar (for my city – Durban)
  • The Cutest Daily Salah Charts for 2 months which I downloaded from www.riadaljanna.com
    • Salah Doorknob Hangers encouraging waking up for Fajr Salah (download found in this blogpost)
      • Plain Paper which we used to write special letters to the parents regarding their intention to perform all 5 Salah and requesting Dua and assistance. See the pic below
Letters written by the students to their parents

Salah is Better than Sleep

Front of doorknob hanger – You have permission to sprinkle water on my face
Back of doorknob hanger – I’ve set my alarm to wake up for Fajr Salaah

The students coloured and designed these and I laminated them after which, they took it home to use. Alhumdulillah, the feedback after this was great so I decided to share it.

Click the download button below to download the PDF and print it inshaAllah!

Oh and don’t forget to make them write “Salah is better than sleep” on both sides of the door hanger handle.

Alhumdulillāh, as the days went by, they progressed and many of them started performing Fajr every day.

P.S: I have written a post about Salaah Time in the classroom, check it out below:⁣

https://madrasahteacher.wordpress.com/2020/02/10/salaah-time/

I hope you found this beneficial and I’d love to know your thoughts and feedback after you’ve also tried it out!

May Allah accept all our efforts and forgive us for our errors. Aameen.

Relax Testing Tips Poster created for my classroom

Exams, Tests, Marks and End of the year = High stress levels & anxiety for students & teachers.

Even small environmental changes for students can result in big changes in performance. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

When students are more relaxed, they tend to perform better and this is particularly true for students who face academic challenges.⁣⁣⁣⁣

Green, Yellow and Black
Green & Yellow

I wanted to create them as cost effective (less ink) and with calm colours so it can be of benefit to anyone inshaAllah

➡️𝟐~ 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝⁣⁣⁣

Make sure your students have everything they will need to take the tests, including a ruler, eraser, pencils and colours.

I like to make them make a list of what they’ll need and bring all items neatly labelled 1/2 days prior to exams. ⁣⁣

➡️𝟑~ 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠⁣⁣⁣

Allow them to keep their usual ‘places’ for comfort but extra spaced out than usual to minimize distraction and temptation to cheat. I like to give them cardboard folders to place in front of them to cover their tests and keep them focused on their own tests.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

➡️𝟒~ 𝐃𝐮𝐚⁣⁣⁣

Most importantly, Start every exam session with 2 Rakaats of Nafl Salaah and Dua.⁣⁣⁣

Revision of Surahs, Duas & Hadeeth

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم⁣⁣

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐬, 𝐃𝐮𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐡

⁣⁣𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬⁣

Each child is rewarded with a sticker for every Surah/Dua/Hadith read correctly. At the end, teacher can reward them according to how many stickers they have.

⁣⁣𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐮𝐩 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬/𝐈𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬⁣

Stick a piece of paper with the name of Surahs/Duas/Hadeeth onto the sticks. Students have to read it correctly before being allowed to keep the stick. Player with the most sticks wins.⁣⁣

𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠⁣

Match the surah/dua/hadeeth to its name. Students have to read it correctly before taking the set. (Create your own cards by photocopying the Surahs/Duas/Hadeeth from your kitab and lay them out on a desk/table upside down)

⁣⁣𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐥⁣

Wrap up a class gift or class incentive (such as ice cream day or outside free play time) with many layers of paper (we always have some used paper lying around in our classes, don’t we?)⁣

Each layer should have a piece of paper with a surah/dua/hadeeth name. Students have to read correctly before unwrapping the layer, if they can’t, make sure to have a plan in mind for them to learn it correctly.⁣⁣

𝟑𝟎 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬

⁣Use any game board from a board game (P.s: make sure it has no animate objects/features) Make your own question cards or stick Surah/Dua/Hadeeth names onto the board. You can pair up or make teams for this game and use the 30 seconds timer to see how many Surahs/Duas/Hadeeth can be recited in 30 seconds.⁣⁣

𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡⁣

Apa throws a bouncy or beach ball at learners in random. Students have to catch the ball and correctly read the Surah/Dua/Hadeeth that the Apa chooses in order to remain in the game. ⁣⁣⁣

𝐒𝐩𝐢n 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞⁣/Stick

Students on each end of the bottle may test each other a Surah/Dua/Hadeeth of their choice.

May Allah make it easy for us to assist the students in our care to keep their memorization strong and accept all our efforts.

V.I.P Privileges system

My Classroom V.I.P Desk

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Classroom privilege is an exciting initiative for learners especially with 8-12year old learners.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The 𝐕.𝐈.𝐏 privilege in a classroom can be used in many ways. I’ve tried the following methods:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
1} I have written the names of my learners, folded them up and placed into a case and each day, I pick one out without letting anyone know the name. The name is then placed into a “used/done” case. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For the entire Madrasah time, every time he/she is exceeding expectations and doing very well, I make comments such as: “Mashā’ Allāh, the 𝐕.𝐈.𝐏 is doing his/her work so well” or “The 𝐕.𝐈.𝐏 is learning his Sabaq and following instructions mashā’ Allāh”.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
(Take note that learners are still unaware who this learner is)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If the learner is misbehaving or not following instructions, I make comments such as: “I hope the 𝐕.𝐈.𝐏 is going to pay attention” or “I wonder if there’ll be a 𝐕.𝐈.𝐏 tomorrow”. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝐀𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐈 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐕.𝐈.𝐏!!! 📢⁣⁣
⁣⁣
4 years ago, when I started method, I had the names of the learners written once each and placed into the case, which meant that each time a learner became the V.I.P, they knew that there is no chance of them becoming V.I.P again until the next round of names/until the entire class names have been exhausted. This also made it easy for them to guess whose name had been picked when there were a few learners left. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Thereafter, I have now written each learners name twice, folded up and placed into the case. The learners are now aware that their names can be picked again even if they have been V.I.P once already.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
2} I’ve used the above method also with a weekly V.I.P system. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Method: If the learner’s name was picked on Monday, I would keep them on their toes till Friday to see who the V.I.P for next week is going to be. This also works very well. Alhumdulillāh.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
See the pics below for “What privileges does a V.I.P get?” (This will differ from classroom to classroom) and “What happens if the learner doesn’t follow expectations?”⁣

Friday/Jumuah Checklist

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم ⁣⁣

⁣⁣”Definitely Friday is the best of days for you” أو كما قال ﷺ⁣⁣⁣⁣

Due to most of us living in Non-Muslim countries, Friday is a “normal” working, school and Madrasah day.

⁣⁣⁣⁣In order to ensure that the sanctity and speciality of Friday is maintained, we, as the teachers of Deen need to try to revive this from our classrooms.⁣⁣⁣⁣

Let’s make Friday the BEST DAY in our weeks and in our classrooms. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

Let’s show them how the best day is supposed to be spent.⁣⁣⁣⁣

This checklist will inshā Allāh assist us in making Friday a special day in the lives of our children/students and in our classrooms.⁣⁣⁣⁣

I’ve displayed this in the classroom and on the Madrasah notice board so that everyone is reminded of it.⁣⁣⁣⁣

Let us try to practise the Sunnah acts of Friday in our classroom:⁣⁣⁣⁣

  • Read Surah Kahf together with the learners. (Or the first and last ten ayāt/verses)⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • Lots of Durood/Salawāt especially the 80 durood/salawāt after ‘Asr Salāh⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • Ask the questions on the Friday checklist⁣⁣⁣⁣- Morivate them to wear their best kurta or abaya on Friday
  • ⁣⁣⁣⁣Make a special time for Duā’ after ‘Asr Salāh either individually or collectively ⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • Explain the virtues of Friday and Jumu’ah
  • ⁣⁣⁣⁣Many teachers do a special activity or craft or bring an extra special treat on a Friday for their learners and if you have the time, then that’s a really great idea also.⁣ ⭐

Remember me in your duās on this Mubārak day ♥️ ⁣⁣#madrasahteacher ⁣⁣#madrasahideas ⁣⁣#madrasahtips⁣⁣

Salaah Time

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

Every little child that enters our classroom has to read at least 1 Salaah before going home.

Depending on seasonal time change, it should either be Zuhr, Asr or sometimes Maghrib Salaah also.

All 3 of these Salaahs are inclusive of Faraaidh and Sunan Raka’at.

As a teacher, we should ensure that all these are peformed at Madrasah (in congregation or individually) by every learner.

To ease the expectations and transition from other activities into Salaah time, here are some guidelines for teachers:

  1. Timeously ensure that bags and desks are arranged at the same time every day so that learners can form rows for Salaah
  2. Teach the importance of performing Salaah in straight rows especially for boys and appoint one learner to check each row if Salaah is not in congregation.
  3. If Salaah is being performed in congregation, the Imaam of the day should check the rows and straighten them.
  4. Honour the Imaam by placing a special Musalla/Sajjada/Prayer Mat for him
  5. If learners are reading aloud together (which proves to be effective for younger learners even upto 9/10years old) then ensure that every learner is recting aloud.
  6. The Salaah recitation can be used to revise previous/back surahs. A roster (spanning 1 a term) has been attached below.
  7. Ensure that the postures of every learner is continuously supervised and corrected.
  8. Ensure that the duas of every learner is also continuously supervised and corrected.
  9. If learners are erring in certain duas or surahs during Salaah, the onus is upon us to ensure that they learn it out of Salaah time correctly.
  10. The mood of the classroom at Salaah time should be utmost oeace and silence.
  11. Learners should be conscientised that this time is non-negotiable and utmost concentration is imperative.
  12. Girls should be made to stand at the back of the boys

The file below is a list of Salaah time guidelines. This can be placed at strategic points in the classroom and learners must be reminded of these weekly if not daily.

This file has a column for: day/date, Name of Pupil and 2 Surahs.

File 2 below is a Salaah roster that can be used to track which Surahs are going to be recited in the 1st 2 Rakaahs of the Fardh Salaah every day

The Surahs that have been added already are Surahs AdDuha to AnNaas of the Juz Amma. The 2 Surahs of these that have not been added are Surahs Al Bayyinah and Al Alaq.

And editable file of this has also been attached below.

If you’d like a roster to be created especially for your classroom, please Instagram message, comment below or email madrasahteacher@gmail.com

Happy printing and sharing.

Please provide feedback, suggestions and ideas on any printable you’d like to se eot have tried.

Madrasah Daily Checklist

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

Settling into routine and setting rules and procedures at the beginning of the year are some of the most important topics that are spoken about and researched by teachers every year.

Sometimes, I feel like I sound like a broken record or I should have recorded myself and play that recording daily, haha. So instead of doing something clown-ish, I came up with a solution that has Alhumdulillah worked for me.

This post is going to provide you with a tool that will inshaAllah assist with settling into routine without repeating yourself over and over again.

This printable can be used in different ways:

  1. I printed and laminated a few of these and stuck them at strategic points and would refer to it as: “have you followed the checklist today?”
  2. This year, I’ve placed a checklist on each learner’s desk and will also refer to it like before.
  3. The printable could be printed as A3 and hung up / stuck up in the classroom also.
  4. A checklist could be placed on each learner’s shelf or personal file.

P.S: This will work effectively with lots of encouragement and incentives also.

If you would like an editable version of this checklist, please feel free to dm, email or comment below.

Click below to download. Happy printing!

I’d love to hear your feedback and suggestions so please interact via Instagram, email or in the comments below

Welcome Back To Madrasah

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

I hope that the beginning of 2020 has been treating you well. May Allah grant us success in all our endavours.

I love welcoming my students back to Madrasah and to my classroom every year with a little treat or gift and this year has been no different.

As usual, there are so many ideas and thoughts but like I’ve said in a previous post – Practicality over novelty.

I eventually decided on HIGHLIGHTERS! Because who doesn’t love a pop of colour and cuteness in their books/study notes.

Alhumdulillah, my 20 little munchkins were extremely pleased and I can’t wait to have a successful, full of learning yet fun-filled year with them.

These tags can be used for any grade level from Grade R to even Grade 5.

All you’ve got to do is print, personalise, cut and you are ready to go!

Happy printing!
